ECONOMIC CLASSES : FEDERAL SKILLED WORKER PROGRAM

Skilled workers are people who may become Permanent Residents because they have the education, work experience, knowledge of English or French and other abilities that will help them to establish themselves financially in Canada.

To be accepted to immigrate to Canada as a skilled worker, you must meet the minimum work experience requirements, prove that you have enough money to support yourself and your dependents for at least six months after arriving in Canada, and earn a minimum of 67 points in the six selection factors.

The six selection factors and the maximum number of points awarded for them are:

1. Education (maximum 25 points)
2. Official languages (maximum 24 points)
3. Experience (maximum 21 points)
4. Age (maximum 10 points)
5. Arranged Employment in Canada (maximum 10 points)
6. Adaptability (maximum 10 points)

In addition to earning a minimum of 67 points and meeting the minimum of work experience requirements you must also qualify under one of the 3 sub-categories of the Federal Skilled Worker Class:

1. Arranged Employment - You must have an offer of permanent employment accompanied by a work permit or Arranged Employment Opinion from HRSDC OR
2. One Year Working or Studying in Canada – You must be a foreign national who has been living legally in Canada for one year as a temporary foreign worker or an international student, OR
3. 38 Listed Occupations - You must be a skilled worker who has at least one year of experience in one or more of the 38 occupations listed below:

If you are married or living with a common-law partner, you must decide who will be the principal applicant in your Canada immigration application. The other person will be the dependent in the application.

Before immigrating to Canada as a skilled worker, you should consider a number of factors:

1. Whether you will need to be licensed before being able to work in your occupation in Canada;
2. Whether your diplomas will be recognized in Canada; and
3. Canadian labour market and where in Canada you will have the best chance of finding employment.

You and your dependent children (even if they are not coming to Canada with you) will have to take a medical examination in order to come to Canada.
