Do You Need A Study Permit, A Temporary Resident Visa or Both?
If you plan to study in Canada for more than 6 months, in most cases you will need a study permit.
If you are from a country whose citizens require a visa to enter Canada you will first need to apply for a temporary resident visa.
Studying Without Permit
You do not require a study permit in the following situations:
(1) If you take a course or program in Canada that lasts six months or less, you do not need a study permit however you must complete the course or program within six months and you must complete it within the duration authorized for your stay in Canada. (See “Remaining In Status”)
Beware that if you wish to continue your studies beyond six months you must apply through a Canadian visa office outside Canada for a study permit if you do not already have one.
(2) If you are a family member or staff member of a foreign representative to Canada accredited by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada you may not need a permit to study in Canada.
(3) If you are a member of a foreign armed force under the Visiting Forces Act you do not need a permit to study in Canada.
(4)Children of foreign workers who have valid work permits may study in pre-schools, kindergartens, public primary or secondary schools without study permits.
