Extending Your Study Permit
In order to extend you stay you should check the expiry date on your study permit and make sure you file your application before the date on which it expires. Because extensions can sometimes take several months you are advised to apply to extend your stay at least 60 days before the expiry the start date of your next school program.
If you apply to renew your study permit, and the permit expires before you receive an answer, you can continue to study in Canada under the same conditions until you receive a decision from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) This is referred to as “Implied Status”
You should apply to renew your study permit well in advance if you plan to travel outside Canada and if your permit will expire while you are outside Canada.
Also beware of the expiry date on your passport because you will not be allowed to extend your study permit beyond the expiry date on your passport.
If your study permit has expired, and you have not applied for an extension, your stay in Canada becomes unauthorized and you must leave Canada.
If you have lost your immigration status in Canada you have 90 days from the date you lose status to make an application to restore your status.
