Off Campus Work Permits for Foreign Students

Off campus work permits are available to international students. You may work on campus at the institution where you study without a work permit, if you have a valid study permit and if you are a full-time student at a public post-secondary institution in Canada, such as a college or university, or at a private college-level educational institution in Quebec or a Canadian private institution authorized by provincial statute to confer degrees.

If you want to work off campus, you will need to apply for a work permit. To qualify, you must be a full-time student enrolled at a participating public post-secondary educational institution or in an approved program at an eligible private institution.

Students of eligible schools may apply for a work permit to work off-campus for up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions and full-time during the breaks such as winter, spring or summer holidays.

After you have studied full-time in Canada and have completed a program of study lasting at least eight months, you may apply for a post-graduate work permit that allows you to work in Canada.

Depending on the type and duration of educational programs, the post-graduate work permits for students can range from 8 months to 3 years.

If you are interested in maximizing the duration of your post-graduate work permit and increasing your potential eligibility for permanent residence, it is important to enroll in an appropriate educational program at a qualified institution. [Click here for more information]
