A foreign national must not study in Canada unless authorized to do so by a study permit or unless permitted by law. For example, if a person has been admitted to Canada as a visitor they may take a course or program of studies that does not exceed six months and can be completed within the period of their authorized stay in Canada.

Most foreign nationals must apply for a study permit before entering Canada. Before a study permit is issued to a foreign national, written documentation from the educational institution confirming acceptance must be acquired. In certain cases it may be possible to get a study permit approved in writing before entering Canada and without written documentation from the educational institution.

A foreign national must demonstrate they have sufficient and available financial resources to pay the tuition fees for the course of study and to maintain themselves and their family members who are accompanying them during the course of study and can pay the cost of transporting themselves to and from Canada.

A foreign national holding a study permit is permitted to work without a permit if they are a full-time student of a university or college but can only work on the campus of the university or college and only for the period for which they hold a study permit. However, in some circumstances a foreign national holding a study permit can apply for and receive a work permit to work off campus.

If you are a recent graduate of a university or community college, a publicly funded trade/technical school or a private institution authorized by provincial, statute to confer degrees, you may apply for one year of post-graduate employment. A student must have completed all the requirements for their degree or diploma and the program must have been for at least 8 months of full-time studies.

The employment must be consistent with the recently completed course of studies and the student must have a valid employment offer. The application must be submitted within 90 days of issuance of evidence of having completed the program of studies.

Individual provinces within Canada have programs which allow for recent graduates to work for more than one year on a post-graduate permit. Opportunities also exist for graduates of post-secondary institutions to apply for and gain permanent resident status in Canada. (See attached list to Provincial Nominee Program)
